Project SEEK
About 17 years ago, state budget cutbacks threatened to end vital
enrichment programs at McGaugh. A group of parents formed Project SEEK in
response. State funding has never been restored to pre-crisis levels, so
Project SEEK has become a critical part of providing the extra programs we
all want for our children. Project SEEK
is a California 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation made up of dedicated parent
volunteers who raise money for McGaugh Elementary School. Our mission is to
support enrichment programs for all McGaugh students.
Because Project SEEK is not a membership organization, regular meetings are
not scheduled; instead volunteers typically gather when there is a job to do,
such as tallying dessert orders, working Open House or helping at our annual
adult evening fundraiser, The Event. This way parents are able to share
special skills and talents and structure their volunteer efforts around their
own busy family lives.
Project SEEK was proud to donate $104,000 for the 2010-11 school
year to help support credentialed teachers in the media center and art lab.
Here's how the process works: Each year, Principal Daryle Palmer conducts a
Needs Assessment review that includes working with McGaugh's staff to determine
schoolwide priorities. The principal then meets with the Project SEEK
board to discuss the proposed needs before the district's forward funding
deadline in February. This school year, Project SEEK was able to fund
everything Mrs. Palmer requested. Specific requests for next year have not been
made yet by the school's administration.
Project SEEK holds many fundraisers throughout the school
year to raise the money needed to reach our funding goal. These include the Fall Donation Drive, Gift Wrap
Sales, Family Photo Events, Dippin Dots, the Dessert Fundraiser, Family Pasta Night
at Open House in May, Escrip and One-Cause online shopping, and of course the
ever popular spring, adult only dinner dance and auction.
