Los Alamitos Elementary School has exceeded the state's Academic Performance Index (API) target of 800 and Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) targets each year. The school is a National Blue Ribbon School and a two-time California Distinguished School. 
LAE was recognized as a Silver Medal School by The Orange County Register's 2011 Public School Rankings.  The Register's 2011 Best Public Schools report honors a total of 146 elementary schools with gold, silver and bronze medals.
In addition, LAE made the California Business of Education Excellence 2010 Honor Roll.  The honor roll includes 1,221 California public elementary, middle and high schools that have been recognized by California’s business community for having demonstrated consistent high academic achievement and making significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among all students.

Principal Sunghie Okino Receives Multiple Awards for Leadership   Dr. Sunghie Okino was recognized this year as the district’s administrator of the year as well as the Seal Beach Lions Club administrator of the year.  Dr. Okino also received special recognition as Orange County’s Elementary Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). 


Mrs. Marilyn Schefski Awarded Los Alamitos Unified School District Teacher of the Year   Mrs. Marilyn Schefski, fifth grade teacher, was selected as the district’s teacher of the year.  She is known for the difference she makes in students both academically and personally.  Dr. Okino describes Mrs. Schefski as “a fierce advocate for students and the epitome of someone who truly believes that all children can learn at high levels”. 


Mrs. Denise Fielden Awarded Scholarship to Space Camp   Mrs. Fielden, fifth grade teacher, is one of 200 teachers from 27 countries and 47 states selected to attend Honeywell Educators at Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Alabama.  This summer, Mrs. Fielden will participate in 45 hours of intensive classroom, laboratory and even astronaut –style training time, focusing on space science and space exploration.







Ms. Allyson Parker Awarded Seal Beach Host Lions Club Teacher of the Year Award   Ms. Allyson Parker, fourth grade teacher, was selected at LAE’s Seal Beach Lions Club Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Parker has been described as “a model teacher who demonstrates the ‘art’ of teaching!”  Known as someone who is always working to “perfect” her teaching, Ms. Parker goes above and beyond for the good of the entire school.
