    COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

     

    COMPUTER APPLICATIONS I

    5 Credits / Grades 9-12

    Prerequisite:  A timed writing score of at least 25 wpm or certification from middle school

    HS (h)

     

    This is a project-based course designed to introduce students to the Microsoft Office suite of applications.  Students will become proficient in the programs Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint.  Student will also explore aspects of the Internet including searching and retrieving data, as well as basic web page design ideas.  This course meets one of the requirements for the Graphic Design or Computer Science Pathway Cords.

     

    COMPUTER ANIMATION

    5 Credits (up to 10 credits with teacher approval) / Grades 9-12

    Prerequisite:  Computer Applications or teacher approval

    HS (h)

                           

    Students will learn to model and animate in 3D space using industry standard software.  Projects will involve creating models and animations for the Web, video, and print media as well as creating textures and backgrounds.  This course meets one of the requirements for the Graphic Design or Computer Science Pathway Cords.

     

    INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE

    5 Credits / Grades 9-12

    Prerequisite:  A timed writing score of at least 25 wpm or certification from middle school

    HS (h)

     

    This is an introductory course in computer science.  No previous computer experience or knowledge is required.  This course leads students through the process of computer programming utilizing problem solving skills.  The course provides a strong foundation for students who later will take the Advanced Placement class.  The Java programming language will be the vehicle used for implementing computer-based solutions to particular problems.  This course meets one of the requirements for the Computer Science pathway cord.

     

    COMPUTER SCIENCE ADVANCED PLACEMENT

    10 Credits / Grades 9-12

    Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation

    HS (h); CSU / UC (g)

     

    The emphasis of this course is on programming methodology.  Applications of computing provide the context in which this subject is treated; applications are used to develop student awareness for particular algorithms and data structures, as well as elicit students’ problem solving abilities.  Java programming language will be the vehicle used for implementing computer-based solutions to particular problems.  This course meets one of the requirements for the Computer Science pathway cord.
