Outside Coursework Process for LAHS
Outside Coursework Process (LAHS)
Strategic Choices for Summer
While many students navigate high school successfully without summer courses, off-site coursework is generally utilized for two strategic reasons:
- Scheduling Flexibility: To "clear a spot" in a schedule for specific electives, CTE pathways, or AP courses.
- Remediation: To repeat a core course where a grade of D or F was earned, maintaining eligibility for CSU and UC admissions.
Important Considerations
Before registering for an outside course, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
- Pre-Approval is Required: All summer coursework must be pre-approved to ensure credit acceptance and inclusion on the student's transcript.
- The 6-Class Constant: Taking a summer course provides flexibility but does not reduce the workload during the regular school year. Students are still expected to maintain a full load of six classes during the fall and spring semesters.
- The Value of a "Brain Break": High school is academically rigorous. Often, a summer dedicated to rest, volunteering, or part-time work contributes more to a student’s "college story" and well-being than an extra academic course.
Note on Board Policy: Please be aware that Board Policy regarding off-site coursework is currently under review. We anticipate updates to these guidelines by late April.
