The Los Alamitos Unified School District Facilities Department works collectively on a variety of projects for the District.  The department works diligently on the various stages of projects such as pre-planning, planning, design, bidding, construction and close-out.

Since the completion of the modernization projects that were funded primarily by the 2008 General Obligation Bonds, also know as Measure K funds, the Los Alamitos Unified School District continues to make improvements to the school sites.  These improvements include the replacement of aging playground structures, additional classroom learning spaces, replacement of aging and/or non-functioning systems and infrastructure, parking lot expansions and energy conservation projects. 

Recently completed projects include the replacement of two playgrounds at Hopkinson Elementary School and two playgrounds at Rossmoor Elementary School.  At Oak Middle School, a two classroom portable was installed to support the District Priority goal to continue facility and technology improvements to meet current educational demands.  Similarly, an unused wood shop at Los Alamitos High School was renovated to include air conditioning and to create an additional learning space.  The west parking lot at the High School was expanded and reorganized to improve circulation and provide additional parking spaces for both staff and students.

Currently, the District is in progress with the installation of security fencing at Weaver and single point of entry/access point at Los Alamitos Elementary and McGaugh Elementary schools.  A replacement playground for Weaver Elementary is currently in the design and approval stage.  Construction of a Career Technical Education classroom is underway at Los Alamitos High School to support the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics initiative.


Construction contracts awarded on or after January 1, 2014, and until January 1, 2019, Public Contract Code section 20111.6 requires the governing board of a school district with an average daily attendance over two thousand five hundred (2,500) to prequalify bidders for public works projects using any funds received pursuant to the Leroy F. Greene School Facilities Act of 1998 (Education Code section 17070.10 et seq.) or any funds from any future state school bond for a public project with a projected expenditure of one million dollars ($1,000,000) or more and projects using the lease-leaseback construction delivery method pursuant to Education Code section 17400 et seq., the governing board of a school district must adopt a resolution to prequalify contractors.

Public Contract Code 20111.5 enables districts to require prime contractors to be prequalified prior to accepting bids.

Public Contract Code 20111.6 requires the district to do so for certain projects. This applies to prime contractors and MEP subcontractors with the following licenses:

  • General Contractors (A and B), Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing subcontractors (C-4, C-7, C-10, C-16, C-20, C-34, C-36, C-38, C-42, C-43, and C-46)
  • The District must receive complete applications at least ten (10) business days prior to the scheduled bid opening on any advertised project in order for the candidate to qualify for a project in excess of $1,000,000 and partially funded by the State. Pre-qualification approval will remain valid for one (1) calendar year from the date of notice of qualification except as noted in the pre-qualification documents.
