Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year! Our Board of Education joins me in welcoming our students, staff, families, and community to another exciting year in Los Alamitos Unified. I hope you had an opportunity to relax, recharge, and enjoy meaningful time with family and friends this summer. Our Weaver Whales have already led the way, and tomorrow, we are excited to see our campuses across the District come alive again as we welcome students back.
As another school year begins, I am reminded that what makes Los Alamitos Unified such a special place is not a building or a program. It is our people, the relationships we build, the partnerships we share, and our commitment to helping every student learn, grow, and succeed.
Each year, we embrace a District-wide theme that reflects those values and helps guide our work together. Over the years, our themes have challenged us to be Better Together, remain Forward Focused, Be Extraordinary, and, most recently, recognize the lasting impact we have on one another For Good. Each has captured an important part of who we are and who we continually strive to become.
This year, we continue that journey by Defying Expectations.
For Good reminded us that our words, actions, and relationships leave a lasting impact. Defying Expectations challenges us to believe in what is possible, for ourselves, for one another, and especially for our students. It reminds us not to allow expectations, assumptions, obstacles, or even our own doubts to define what someone can achieve.
The truth is, Defying Expectations is not something new in Los Alamitos Unified. It has always been part of who we are. It lives in the way our students challenge themselves, our staff create opportunities and inspire growth, our families partner with us, and our community supports our schools. This year, we are simply giving a name to something that has long been woven into the fabric of our District.
We see that spirit across our schools every day. Sometimes it is found in moments that may never make a headline but mean everything: a student reaching a milestone they once thought was out of reach, discovering a new strength, making meaningful progress toward an individual goal, or persevering through a challenge. It is found in a teacher inspiring a love of learning or a staff member helping a student discover what they are capable of. Other times, it is reflected in extraordinary accomplishments: passing an AP exam, completing a CTE pathway, winning a CIF championship or state title, representing Team USA, performing on a national stage, or earning admission to a dream college. Whether the accomplishment is known by a few people or celebrated by thousands, it often begins the same way: someone believing that more is possible.
Throughout the year, we look forward to sharing the many ways our students and staff are Defying Expectations. We encourage you to stay connected through our website, social media channels, and our weekly Wrap-up videos, as we celebrate the people, programs, and accomplishments that make Los Alamitos Unified such a special place.
Thank you for the trust you place in us and for the important role you play in the Los Al family. We are grateful for your partnership and excited about all that lies ahead. Here's to a school year filled with learning, growth, connection, opportunity, and possibilities beyond what we may have imagined.
