Nondiscrimination Statement

The Governing Board of the Los Alamitos Unified School District (LAUSD) is committed to providing equal opportunity for all individuals in education. Types of Complaints

Uniform Complaint Procedures (UCP)

Uniform Complaint Procedure (UCP)

For complaints alleging the District’s violation of state or federal laws/regulations governing programs or activities, or unlawful discrimination (including harassment, intimidation or bullying) based on a protected characteristic. Complaints under the UCP should be submitted in writing to the District’s compliance officer as defined in the Board Policy.

Timeline & Process Highlights

The District is required to investigate complaints and issue a written decision within a reasonable period (often 60 days) unless extended or a different timeline applies.
The District policy protects complainants from retaliation and maintains confidentiality to the extent possible.

Title IX

Student Rights Under Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

No person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any academic, extracurricular, research, occupational training, or other education program or activity operated by a recipient of federal financial assistance.

Los Alamitos Unified School District is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects individuals from discrimination (including sexual harassment and sexual violence) based on sex in any educational program or activity. Title IX also prohibits retaliation for asserting or otherwise participating in claims of sex discrimination. As a recipient of federal funds, Los Alamitos Unified School District must take immediate and appropriate action to investigate when it knows, or reasonably should know, of a possible Title IX violation.

Students have the right to:

Learn in a safe educational environment free from sex-based discrimination.
Report sexual harassment or gender-based misconduct without fear of retaliation.
Have their complaint investigated promptly and fairly.
Receive supportive measures during and after an investigation.
Appeal certain findings under the District’s Title IX procedures.

Nondiscrimination in Employment

The Los Alamitos Unified School District is committed to providing a safe, respectful workplace free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Policy 4030 protects all employees and applicants— including interns, volunteers, and contractors—from unfair treatment based on a wide range of personal characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, medical conditions, pregnancy, immigration status, and more. The District ensures equal employment opportunities, requires prompt reporting of concerns, provides training, and takes appropriate action to maintain a supportive and inclusive work environment.

Williams Act

The Williams Act (or Williams Legislation) ensures that all students have equal access to fundamental educational resources. It mandates that schools provide students with sufficient instructional materials, maintain clean and safe facilities, and ensure teachers are properly assigned and qualified. Families have the right to file a formal complaint if they believe their school is not meeting these basic requirements.
